Trailer: 'Life During Wartime' from Todd Solondz

Life During Wartime is a sequel of sorts to Happiness, the controversial 1998 film by our favorite fag filmmaker (next to Todd Haynes, of course), Todd Solondz. He's also the guy who created Dawn Wiener of Welcome to the Dollhouse, and this new movie features an ensemble cast of many of the same characters from Happiness, only recast with different actors. It stars Allison Janney, Ally Sheedy, Paul Reubens, and Ciaran Hinds in the pedophile role originated by Dylan Baker.

Solondz has previously played with the recasting of characters in Palindromes and I'm Not There (Oh, right that was Haynes). We suppose he's experimenting with ideas about archetypes or something, but anyway, this movie generated only a bit of buzz coming off the film fest circuit because it isn't nearly as provocative as Happiness was in its day. It gets a wide release in the U.K. this week, and according to this review, will finally get a U.S. release in July. [via WOW]

This movie is darkly, sickly hilarious.

Anyone who loves Solondz's other films, particularly HAPPINESS, will like WARTIME.

It has a pretty off-the-wall cast. Pee Wee Herman, Ally Sheedy; it's full of surprises. Charlotte Rampling's character will blow your mind!

OMG - our bad with the mis-attribution of I'm Not There. We're always confusing these two, despite loving them both equally...
