Beloved NYC Gay Bar Set To Close
July 16, 2011 at 7:52 AM
This makes us sad. Pieces, the Manhattan gay bar operating for 18 years and known for it's karaoke, cheap drinks ($4 Long Islands!), and seasonal over-the-top decor, has been denied its liquor application over complaints of noise, outdoor smoking, and "sex acts in doorways."
The Christopher Street hangout, which was hoping to move to a new location a few blocks over when their current lease runs out, was denied a liquor license by the Community Board. Despite a petition to keep it open, as well as some heartfelt press coverage by the Village Voice, opponents of the establishment raised concerns over late-night noise and increased street traffic if the bar moved to 8th Street.
The bar was also known for its charity events, drag shows, and liquid brunch. We had some gay ol' times at Pieces and will definitely remember it fondly.
